European Aristocrat Dies In Jail
(published on Aug 11, 2006)

European aristocrat Christoff von Hohenlohe died of unknown causes at
the Bangkok Remand Prison earlier this week, officials and relatives
confirmed yesterday.

"Hohenlohe died on Tuesday. We've sent all the details to the Swiss
Embassy," said a prison official, who asked not to be named. "He was
here on charges of possessing false documents," the official said
without elaborating.

Christoph's brother, Hubertus von Hohenlohe, said Christoph arrived in
Thailand in mid-July on a transit visa but had overstayed by a day
after missing his flight.

Hohenlohe, 49, from Liechtenstein, apparently altered the date on his
visa, leading to his arrest on July 29 at Bangkok International
Airport. Hubertus said his brother had been denied bail twice. An
autopsy was under way to determine the nature of Hohenlohe's death.

"It's strange," Hubertus said after arriving in Bangkok on Sunday to
help get his brother out of custody. In an interview with Italian
newspaper Corriere Della Sera, he said their mother visited Christoph
in jail on Saturday, and he was in a room without mattresses.

newspaper Corriere Della Sera, he said their mother visited Christoph

"Ultimate destination Bangkok. In the worst prison of the Thai capital
"Christoph Prinz zu Hohenlohe" (49) broke down and died a little later.
The son of Ira von Fürstenberg (66) was arrested at the Bangkok airport
for his expired visa.

Christoph "Prinz zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg" (49) went to Thailand for loosing
weight in a special clinic. He died because he made a few lines in his
passport
with a pencil, got arrested and was brought to jail.
The prince was member of the jetset, lived in Geneva and Hawai.
His grandmother is Clara Agnelli (86) who is controlling the assets of
the family,
worth billions in shares of Italian automobile producer "Fiat".
Prince Christoph went to Bangkok in the middle of June. As he wanted to
go back to
Honolulu all seats were occupied. Therefore the price decided to hang on
a few days in Bangkok.
Problem: His visa was expired. The prince changed the date of the visa.

But an immigrat official on the airport discovered the mock. Christoph
was arrested and brought to jail.
A crowded cell with a whole in the ground as the toilet. Mother "Ira
Prinzessin von Fürstenberg" flew to
Bangkok immediately and his brother Hubertus (47), singer and former
ski-racer came from Spain. Both tried
via the Swiss and Italian embassies to get Christoph released on bail.
Rejected! On friday Ira succeeded to
talk with his son.

„He was so shocked. To sit with 40 other inmates in a tiny cell. It
stunk terribly and the prisoner was
already in a bad condition." Said a friend of the family. The German
Prince broke down in the cell. He was taken
to a hospital, were he died on sunday night, said the official report of
the Thai police.

According to the family the reason for his death was a 'sugarshock'
(Zuckerschock)."

When someone dies from 'sugar-shock' it means that the guy
had diabetes. And he needed to take daily medication to control
the level of sugar in his blood.

This guy probably could not communicate with prison guards
about his need for medication. And it seems that his health
wasn't a concern for prison officials either.

His death could have been easily prevented. And I hope that
prison guards in Thailand will learn a lesson from this death and
do better next time.

If this guy died from sugar shock, then he must've had diabetes and
he had to take daily medication to control his blood sugar level.

This guy probably could not take his medication in prison, and that's
why he died. His death was not accidental.

There are a lot of overweight older tourists coming to Thailand every
year. And many of them have the same type of illness that this guy
had.

I hope that Thai prison officials have learned their lesson and will do

better next time.

Just because somebody broke the law, doesn't mean that his health
and his life is unimportant.

I rather doubt this.

Of course not!

The guy was in Thailand for medical reason.
He was a "jetsetter" and forged his visa in his passport. This is a damn
unhealty thing. Anyone with half a brain should know this.
The whole case seems to be a real tragedy. But who is to blame other
than himself?

imho both the individual and the Thai authorities are seriously at fault.

For him to have a medical condition and not be wearing a standard armband
indicating it is poor judgement.

For him to be treated in Thailand and not have on his person medical papers
he could point to and ask someone to call a Doctor is poor judgement. He
could have easily asked his doctors, who I'm sure he paid a lot to, write a
letter in Thai for him explaining his problem and asking for assistance from
all authorities.

At the least you can imagine him saying over and over loudly "Doctor" :
most Thais, even those who would not speak English can get that.

For him to alter his passport is pure stupidity.

For the Thai authorities not to use someone you know they have easily
available in Bangkok who can speak English, or his European language, is
criminal negligence.

For the Thai immigration officials at the moment he was arrested not to have
an interpreter, or at least someone with minimal knowledge of English or his
European language is criminal negligence.

For them to not observe he was very sick and summon medical care is criminal
negligence.

A tragedy.

Nothing to do with overstaying. He had illegal documents.
